Self-fulfilmenthas become the name of the game and it is everyone’s right to enjoy a piece of the action. From this point of view, life is seen asa process and it is not unusual to hear people saying that we are all born with the potential to’become’ someone. It is a commonplace observation to say that Shakespeare, Newton, Mother Theresa and each oneof us shared broadly similar experiencesas we grew to adulthood. We explain how wedevelop by referenceto a number of distinct but overlapping dimensions.

Meaning is created when we put our experience ’into words’ (or other symbols, whichwould include music and art). The words and concepts available at any time are limited and tend to draw a frame around those aspectsof reality that we are attuned to recognize. Understanding is thus ultimately allegorical and metaphorical, never absolute. Fairy tales are as valid a way of giving voice to our experience asthe first lawof thermodynamics (it is just that, in our utilitarian society the latter has more practical use and our explanations are, therefore, more likely to be couched in scientific terms than inthe form of myth).

Despite the endless noise and clamour aimed at convincing us that we live in the age of the individual, the opposite is true. All the major engines for change are increasingly globalin orientation and geared towards the pursuit of profit. As a consequence, the individual is being marginalized and is effectivelyexpendable when the interests of 'progress' dictate. Large-scale institutions dominate the social landscape and have an essentially legalistic outlook on the world. Individuals only have significance in so far as they trigger a category that has been defined as beingappropriate.
